About Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Founded in 1889, the club moved to its present site in the 1890s. Much of its recognizable character comes from the remodeling by Hawtree and J.H. Taylor, who routed holes through the valleys rather than repeatedly taking them over the dunes. The surrounding sand hills also created natural places for spectators to watch championship golf.

The art deco clubhouse opened in 1935 and remains a landmark above the closing hole. Royal status followed in 1951, and the course first hosted The Open in 1954. Those milestones help explain Birkdale’s place in British golf without relying on a changing ranking. For visitors, the attraction is the combination of that championship history and a links layout shaped by the dunes. Arrangements for play are handled by the club.
