How Handicaps Work
The full breakdown — Course Rating, Slope, Score Differentials, and exactly how every handicap on this site is calculated.
What is a Handicap Index?
A Handicap Index is a number that represents your potential ability as a golfer — specifically, how well you're capable of playing relative to par on a course of standard difficulty. The system used worldwide is the World Handicap System (WHS), introduced in 2020 to merge six different regional handicap systems into one unified global standard.
A few things to understand from the start:
- A 0.0 handicap means you're a scratch golfer — expected to shoot around even par on a course of average difficulty.
- A 10.0 handicap means you're expected to shoot around 10 over par on that same course.
- A +3.0 handicap (plus handicap) means you're better than scratch — expected to score 3 under par. You'll see this on elite players throughout this site.
- The WHS measures your potential, not your average. It deliberately focuses on your best recent rounds and ignores your off days.
- The maximum Handicap Index is 54.0, regardless of how high someone scores.
Course Rating
Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer (0.0 handicap) playing a specific set of tees under normal conditions. It's expressed in strokes to one decimal place — for example, 72.5 or 70.1.
Course Rating accounts for many factors: total yardage, water and bunker placement, rough difficulty, green speed, tree positions, elevation changes, and prevailing conditions. A regulation par-72 course might carry a rating of 71.4 if it plays slightly friendly, or 74.6 if it genuinely challenges elite players. The rating is not the same as par.
Course Ratings are assigned by authorized golf associations — in the US, that's the USGA. An official ratings team visits the course, walks every hole, and evaluates it by a standardized methodology. The course itself does not set its own rating. This makes Course Rating one of the most objectively derived numbers in all of golf.
Slope Rating
Slope Rating measures how much more difficult a course is for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. It runs on a scale from 55 to 155, with 113 defined as standard — the average course difficulty. Most courses fall somewhere between 100 and 140.
Here's why Slope matters: some layouts are punishing for high-handicap players in ways that barely register for scratch golfers. A course with long forced carries over water, tight fairways, and punishing rough might add 3–4 strokes to a scratch golfer's round but add 10–12 to a 20-handicapper's. The Course Rating captures the scratch difficulty; Slope captures the extra penalty for everyone else.
- Slope 113 — standard difficulty. The math normalizes perfectly here (no adjustment effect).
- Slope below 113 — easier than standard. High handicappers are not penalized as severely by the layout.
- Slope above 113 — harder than standard. High handicappers face disproportionate difficulty.
- Slope 155 — the maximum. Extraordinarily punishing, even for good players.
The number 113 appears in the core differential formula specifically because it is the defined standard Slope. It is not arbitrary — it is the anchor point of the entire Slope scale.
Score Differential
The Score Differential is the fundamental calculation in WHS handicapping. It converts a raw score into a difficulty-adjusted number that can be compared fairly across any course, any tees, anywhere in the world.
Breaking down each component:
- 113 — the standard Slope (the scale's midpoint)
- Slope Rating — the course's actual slope rating; if higher than 113, the fraction shrinks, reducing the differential
- Gross Score — your adjusted gross score for the round (see AGS section below)
- Course Rating — the expected scratch score for that set of tees
The result is rounded to one decimal place.
Worked Example: Single Round
A player shoots 82 on a course with a Course Rating of 71.2 and a Slope of 125:
Why Slope Changes Everything
The power of the differential formula is that the same raw score on different courses produces very different differentials — and that's by design. Here's what happens when a player shoots 80 on three different courses:

All three rounds scored 80, but the differentials range from 4.8 to 14.5. The player on the tough members' course gets significantly more credit for their performance — shooting 80 there is a genuinely strong round. The system accounts for that. Shooting the same 80 on a short, easy layout is considerably less impressive.
The Last 20 Qualifying Rounds
WHS doesn't look at every round a player has ever played. It works from a rolling window of their most recent 20 qualifying rounds. Once a player has more than 20 rounds on record, the oldest rounds drop off as new ones are added.
This means a handicap always reflects recent form. A run of good golf lowers it quickly. A rough stretch raises it. Old rounds — great or terrible — eventually age out of the calculation entirely.
A minimum of 3 qualifying rounds is required before a Handicap Index can be established. Until that threshold is met, no handicap is displayed.
The WHS Lookup Table: Best X of 20
Here is where the WHS philosophy becomes clearest: rather than averaging all rounds in the window, it only averages the player's best ones. The number of best differentials used depends on how many total rounds are available:

At the full 20-round window, you're using only the best 8 — the top 40% of your recent differentials. Your 9 worst rounds out of 20 are completely ignored. This is a deliberate design choice: the WHS believes your best recent form is the best predictor of your potential.
Worked Example: Full Handicap Calculation
A player has 14 qualifying rounds in their window. Their score differentials, sorted from best to worst, look like this:
The 0.96 Multiplier
After averaging the best differentials, WHS applies a final × 0.96 multiplier before rounding. This is sometimes called the "bonus for excellence" or the "excellence adjustment."
The 4% reduction serves a specific purpose: WHS research found that golfers tend to perform slightly better in formal competition than in casual rounds. The multiplier nudges the handicap down a touch to account for this, so that players don't gain an artificial advantage in competition by padding their handicap index during casual play.
The result is rounded to one decimal place and capped at 54.0.
Adjusted Gross Score (AGS)
WHS does not blindly feed raw hole scores into the differential formula. First, it applies a per-hole maximum score called the net double bogey cap. Any hole where you scored above this cap gets reduced to the cap before the total is summed. The resulting adjusted total is your Adjusted Gross Score (AGS), and that's what gets used in the differential calculation.
The cap on any hole is:
For a scratch player (no handicap strokes), the cap is simply par + 2 — a double bogey. For a player who receives a stroke on that hole, the cap rises to par + 3. If they receive two strokes on a hole, the cap is par + 4. And so on.
How Handicap Strokes Are Distributed Across Holes
Every course assigns each hole a handicap rank from 1 to 18, where rank 1 is the hardest hole (the first hole to receive an extra stroke) and rank 18 is the easiest. Strokes are distributed as follows:
- Everyone gets a base of floor(playing handicap ÷ 18) strokes on every hole.
- The remaining strokes (playing handicap mod 18) are applied to the lowest-ranked holes first — the hardest holes get the extra stroke.
For example, with a playing handicap of 20:
- Base = floor(20 ÷ 18) = 1 stroke on every hole
- Remainder = 20 mod 18 = 2 extra strokes, given to the two hardest holes (ranks 1 and 2)
- On rank-1 and rank-2 holes: 2 total strokes. All other holes: 1 stroke.
Worked Example: AGS Hole Cap
The AGS cap is important for handicap integrity — without it, a single blow-up hole (a 12 on a par-4) would dramatically inflate a player's differential and artificially inflate their handicap, giving them an unfair advantage in future net competitions.
If only a total score is available and no hole-by-hole data exists, the raw total is used without any AGS adjustment.
Plus Handicaps
A plus handicap — shown as +3.2 rather than 3.2 — means the player is better than scratch. Their best rounds consistently go below the course rating, producing negative score differentials. Average those negative differentials, apply 0.96, and you get a positive (in the "better than scratch" direction) Handicap Index.
In net competition, a plus handicapper actually adds strokes to their own score rather than subtracting them. They are so good that giving strokes to others is the only way to level the playing field.
On this site, plus handicaps appear for the elite YouTube golfers — the ones regularly shooting 68, 69, 70 on courses rated in the low 70s. If a player's profile shows +4.7, it means their best rounds are consistently 4–5 strokes under the course rating adjusted for difficulty.
9-Hole Rounds
The 2024 WHS introduced a specific method for handling 9-hole rounds so they can be incorporated without skewing the 18-hole calculation. The approach combines a 9-hole score differential with the player's "expected" differential — half their current Handicap Index — to produce a synthetic 18-hole equivalent.
The 9-hole differential is calculated using half of the full 18-hole Course Rating (since that rating covers all 18 holes). If a player has no established Handicap Index yet from 18-hole rounds, the 9-hole differential itself is doubled as a conservative fallback.
The combined differential then enters the normal WHS calculation alongside all 18-hole differentials — no special treatment after that point.
Applying WHS to YouTube Golf
Everything in Part 1 is the official World Handicap System — the same methodology used by golf clubs and national associations worldwide. I did not invent any of it. The formulas, the lookup table, the 0.96 multiplier, the AGS rules — that's the USGA and R&A's work, and this site simply applies it.
What makes this site different from an official handicap system is the data source: every score comes from watching YouTube videos and manually recording what happens. No player has submitted anything. No governing body is involved. This is one person tracking golf content and running it through the math.
The handicaps here are unofficial and exist purely for context and fun. They are, to the best of my ability, faithful to WHS methodology. But the data they're built from has real limitations — all of which are explained in detail below.
Which Formats Count Toward Handicap
Not every YouTube golf format counts toward handicap. WHS only applies to individual stroke play — the handicap is meant to measure personal scoring ability, not team performance or match results.
These formats count toward handicap on this site:
- Stroke Play — every stroke counted, all 18 holes (or 9)
- Stableford — individual scoring against par per hole
- Skins — each player plays their own ball throughout
These formats do not count:
- Match Play — only win/loss per hole is recorded; total strokes are not meaningful for handicap purposes
- Best Ball — team format; one player's great shot masks another's poor one, so individual ability cannot be measured fairly
- Scramble — all players hit from the best shot; individual stroke-making ability is entirely removed from the equation
How Scores Are Manually Tracked
When a new episode is published, I watch it, record each hole score for each player, and enter everything into the database. If the video shows hole-by-hole scoring — either through a scorecard graphic, an on-screen tracker, or clearly countable shots — those individual hole scores are logged. If only a total score is visible, just the total is entered.
With hole-by-hole data available, the AGS cap described in Part 1 is applied automatically. A blowup hole gets capped at net double bogey before the differential is calculated. Without individual hole scores, the raw total is used as-is — no cap is applied because there's no way to know which holes it would affect.
Course Rating and Slope Rating come from official sources — primarily the USGA's GHIN database and the course's own official rating documentation. These numbers are as accurate as the course's official certification.
Gimmies and Pickups
YouTube golf is casual. Players give each other short putts, pick up balls when a hole is decided, and concede putts informally throughout the round. This is one of the trickier parts of accurate score tracking.
When a player picks up, I have to make a judgment call on what score to record:
- If a short putt is conceded (a tap-in or clear gimmie), one more stroke is added — so a player who is 3 feet from the hole in 3 gets credited with a 4.
- If a player picks up mid-hole after a bad shot, the score recorded is typically the net double bogey for that hole — because that's the AGS cap anyway, so recording anything above it would not change the handicap calculation.
- If the situation is genuinely ambiguous, it gets recorded conservatively.
The AGS cap is actually helpful here: since any hole score above net double bogey gets capped before the differential is calculated, the exact number recorded on a blowup hole doesn't matter much for handicap purposes — as long as it's at or above the cap value.
What Cannot Be Tracked
There are genuine limitations to tracking golf from a YouTube video. I want to be fully transparent about them. Any of the following could mean a player's recorded score is better (lower) than it should be under official rules:
- Penalty strokes not visible on camera Grounding a club in a bunker, touching a loose impediment in a hazard, moving a ball at rest, taking incorrect relief — these penalties can happen off-camera, without anyone in the group calling them. If it doesn't happen on screen, it doesn't get recorded.
- Incorrectly played OB or drops If a player drops in the wrong location after an out-of-bounds, takes the wrong relief option, or plays from outside the teeing area, I can only track the strokes that appear on screen — not what the correct stroke count would have been under the Rules of Golf.
- Multiple attempts hidden by video editing Videos are edited. If a player hits a tee shot OB and the video cuts to show only the re-tee, what's visible is what gets recorded. If a shot is attempted multiple times before the video captures a clean one, and the edit doesn't make that clear, only the presented attempt counts.
- Incorrect ball identification Playing the wrong ball, illegal drops, improper procedure for unplayable lies — these are invisible from a viewer's perspective unless called out by someone in the group.
- Scorecard discrepancies Occasionally a total shown at the end of a video differs from what I tracked hole by hole. When that happens, I use hole-by-hole tracking when available, since it's more granular and transparent. But if the video only shows a final total, that's what goes in.
None of this is unique to this site — it's inherent to any stats tracking done from video content. These are casual rounds, not USGA-certified competitions. The scores here are good-faith representations of what the video shows, and the handicaps are calculated faithfully from those scores.
Not an Official Handicap
To be clear: no handicap on this site is official, recognized by any governing body, or usable for competition purposes. These numbers are derived from YouTube content by one person tracking everything manually. They're here to add context to the stats, show player improvement over time, and give fans a sense of where each creator stands relative to the field.
If a creator's official GHIN or World Handicap number is publicly known, it may differ from what appears here — and that's expected. Differences could result from rounds we haven't tracked, rounds played on courses not in our database, official handicap committee adjustments, or any of the limitations described above.
The goal is accuracy within those constraints. If you spot something that looks wrong, the contact page is right there.
