About TPC Sawgrass – THE PLAYERS Stadium Course

The course grew from PGA TOUR commissioner Deane Beman’s plan for a permanent tournament home that spectators could follow more easily. Built in 1980, it introduced the stadium concept to the property and first hosted THE PLAYERS in 1982. Beman and Dye aimed to test different styles of golf rather than favor one particular kind of player.

The short 17th is its most recognizable feature: an island green makes the approach the central challenge, whatever the tee position. Its fame is only one part of a course conceived around both competition and the experience of watching it. TPC Sawgrass also has a separate course, Dye’s Valley. A booking or scorecard labeled simply “Sawgrass” should therefore identify which layout it refers to; this page covers the Stadium Course.
